Enviroswim Asks… What Does Sustainable Tourism Actually Mean?

Home Uncategorised Enviroswim Asks… What Does Sustainable Tourism Actually Mean?

Set in the North West coast of Mauritius, facing spectacular sunsets every evening, Angsana Balaclava is an oasis of relaxation and privacy designed ideally for couples and honeymooners.

The resort is not only a romantic and luxurious hideaway, it has been awarded the Bronze Benchmark in 2013 by EarthCheck, the leading environmental certification agency in the travel sector. EarthCheck is used by travel and tourism organizations around the world, to validate and guide their sustainability initiatives. It is the largest environmental benchmarking, certification and management solution in use by this industry. The EarthCheck programme was jointly developed by the Australian government funded Sustainable Tourism Cooperative Research Centre (STCRC) and Australian headquartered EC3 Global.

Once again, Australia is at the forefront of environmental consciousness and sustainable living. Interestingly, the most recent initiative undertaken by EarthCheck was on the subject of water. In March, 2014, they produced a White Paper entitled: Tourism and Water – From Challenges To Solutions. Contributor to the white paper and co-presenter, EarthCheck CEO, Stewart Moore believes water is currently undervalued relative to its true environmental cost, although the situation is changing.

“There’s a nexus between energy and water – water forms part of the production process, and energy is required to produce water. The two are inextricably linked and this puts strains on both resources,” said Mr Moore. “We’ve all become accustomed to carbon footprinting. Next, it will be about water footprinting. That completely changes our thinking and makes us realize that hotel and tourism businesses need to have dedicated water management plans; plans which are actually implemented.”

The smart people at Angsana Balaclava have realized that by using the Enviroswim system to purify the water in their pools, they not only provide the delights of swimming in crystal clear water, they are having less impact on the environment. Because the system requires less energy to run, it offers a solution to that particular challenge as well.
