The Endeavour Foundation prize home has been awarded certification by the national green rating tool Enviro development for meeting the requirements for all six elements to make it sustainable, which includes ecosystems, waste, energy, materials, water and community.
“Reduced operating costs are one of the most appealing aspects of EnviroDevelopment certification, as not only do owners save money, but our certification has the positive effect of increasing the property’s value,” National EnviroDevelopment Manager Valerie Bares said. “This home is particularly effective when it comes to reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions. It has been developed with a clear vision of defined environmental sustainability and liveability goals.”
The home’s 45,000 litre rainwater storage tanks are ample to service the home, native-landscaped garden and in-ground swimming pool.
The Enviroswim ES3 has been installed to ensure optimum efficacy with minimal maintenance costs. Unlike pools that use toxic chemicals such as chlorine, this pool will do no harm to the environment, the water being so pure it can be used to water the plants surrounding the pool.
The house with its seven-star Building Energy rating system (BERS) serves as a source of inspiration to homeowners, who may want to transform or redesign their homes to make them more eco-friendly.
“Before starting any work, plan ahead for what can be reused or recycled and spend the time to research materials which are eco-friendly. Always look at the design of the layout first, as a lot of energy savings can be achieved with placing windows on the right façade, and adding awnings, pelmets and curtains for example.”
