If you are a natural-born swimmer then you know the enormous benefits to be derived from this activity. And if you are one of the million Australians who are lucky enough to own a swimming pool you are likely to be swimming on a regular basis. Good for you!
What might not be so good for you is the swimming pool water purification system you are using. If you’re adding chlorine, you know it has unpleasant side effects:
- burning eyes,
- irritation to the nose and throat,
- damage to the hair, the unpleasant smell,
- the need to take a shower after you swim.
These you will be familiar with but there are further reasons to find an alternative to chlorine. It’s the way chlorine interacts with organic elements in the water such as sweat or urine (and if you have little children in the pool the chances are you’re going to have pee in the pool) that creates chloramines. Chloramines have been proven to be hazardous to human health.
If you are one of the many pool owners who have invested in a salt chlorinator, you’re still swimming in a chlorinated pool. The same is true of most other forms of water purification. Don’t get fooled by the marketing that makes claims for its product to be an eco-friendly pool cleaner.
